I've used FOTI since 1995 in Jail and Prison Ministry and was was really excited when the Reader's Version in large print came out. It meets some needs that the NIV did not. The larger print is helpful for two reasons - those without well developed reading skills always favor larger print, and many inmates have poor vision but do not own glasses to correct that. The Reader's Version is also written with language that is easy to understand in a simple, straight-forward way that communicates the love of God without intimidating a new reader. It is a great read for any one wanting a fresh touch from His Living Word, no matter what you reading skill or bible knowledge level is! Willie K <><

The women who participate in my Bible Study at the county jail love this Bible. Many of the women who come to my study can't read well. This "translation" addresses that problem, and encourages many of the slower readers to actively participate. They underline passages; they discuss passages with each other after I leave. These Bibles get read and used alot!

After doing a great deal of research, this is the Bible I chose for our ministry to send to prisoners. It's a bit more expensive but I think it is worth sending and here's why. After speaking with many Prison Chaplains I have been told that a large number of the prison population has failing eyesight. They tell me that large print Bibles are in high demand and are the ones that are most often requested. Many ministries, individuals and groups send Bibles printed in an 8 point font size print. However, it's hard for many prisoners to read an 8 point font size print because it is so small. This Bible is written in approximately a 10 point font size print. Even though it says large print don't let that fool you into thinking the print is huge. A 10 point font size print isn't huge by any standards. It's a comfortable reading font size for the average person that doesn't require reading glasses. The publisher just put Large-Print on the title so you wouldn't confuse it with the 8 point font size print that is available in the regular NIrV Free on the Inside Paperback Bible. This Large-Print Bible also has a lot of white space. White space is the area on a page that has no print on it. The more white space on a page the easier it is for the eye to focus on what it's reading. The NIrV Free on the Inside Large-Print Paperback Bible is written in such a way that even people with limited reading skills find it easy to read. It is straight forward, uses simple word choices and it is easy to understand. It's not an exact translation of God's Word and wasn't intended to be. It's a readers edition. It gives an overall fullness of understanding of the Bible. As you read It, It's Word choices help the reader to feel God's presence. It helps the reader to understand that God is real and that He loves him/her. Many prisons have very strict rules as to the size and kind of Bibles they will receive. For example many prisons will only allow paperback Bibles. Some have size and weight limitations for each Bible as well. Every prison that I have contacted about this particular Bible has told me that it meets their prison's particular regulations as to what is acceptable. I have also found the testimonies that this Bible inculdes to be uplifting and encouraging. Because it has been written especially for the prison population I personally feel as if it is the best choice that our ministry can offer them at this time. I hope this review has helped you. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about sending Bibles to prisons. I'll be happy to share with you what I've learned so far. God Bless You.
